Elyrax, the Magebane, and the Glittering Lie
Elyrax, the Magebane, and the Glittering Lie (Book)
Descrição
Elyrax, the Magebane, and the Glittering Lie
Elyrax was the dread of all spellcasters, known throughout the lands as Magebane. He had, through dark pacts and ancient knowledge, modified his fiery assault. His breath could choose not only to scorch flesh, but also to burn the very spirit, the magical energy, or Mana-from his victims. He was the sire of many dragons, a master of his breed, and successfully fought off all challengers.
Yet, constant warfare took its toll. Elyrax felt his power wane with each challenge and, fearing a time when his strength would finally fail, he began his desperate search for immortality. Using his unique magic, he kidnapped magicians for generations, forcing them to seek a youth elixir that would restore him. When he tired of a mage's failures, he would devour him and seek a replacement.
One of his later captives, a man whose true name is lost to history, was no master magician, but a glib charlatan who had made a fortune by tricking the populace with cheap remedies and false balms. His exaggerations were so vast they had reached the Dragon's ears, leading to his unfortunate capture. Pressed for the elixir, the charlatan used his sole true skill, the art of deception, to avoid immediate death, forever promising "new insights" and "great breakthroughs, soon!" Over the years, in utter desperation, he offered Elyrax a series of "experimental potions." Noting the Dragon's weakness for all things glittering, the charlatan made his concoctions as shimmery and spectacular as possible.
Though the books do not record it, the most dazzling of these potions were likely laced with mercury and other toxic dusts.
Elyrax grew weaker with each passing year, and in his growing desperation, swallowed the charlatan's glittering draughts all the more eagerly. The irony of his fate was cruel: his downfall came not from a mighty challenger, but from the slow poison of vanity. One day, while holding court, the younger dragons noticed his weakness. When he finally fell asleep in the midst of the meeting, his ambitious descendants pounced on their unbeloved master and tore him to shreds. The unknown charlatan used the ensuing civil war amongst the drakes to flee the cavern, vanishing into history, never to be heard of again.
