The Glacial Greed of Zharvorin From the Founding Sagas of Svargrond, as told by the North-Dwellers

Zharvorin was a dragon whose hunger for gold was as infinite and cold as the Northern Sea he stalked. He became a curse to all maritime folk, for his gaze was set upon the valuable shipments of gold and gems carried by Northern raiders and traders. His signature attack, a devastating Ice Breath, could shatter a longship into splinters with a single blast. When his greed was not sated by the ships he claimed, he would menace coastal villages. In their despair, the ancestors of what would become Svargrond, decided to send ships laden with riches as sacrifice, hoping to appease his endless ire. For generations, this grim custom worked, and a Lottery of Death was held to determine which soul must pilot the doomed vessel to the Dragon's lair.
One year, the lot fell upon a fierce Northern woman known only as Hilda of the Fiords. Despising the cowardice of her people, she sailed out, but as the great Ice Dragon approached, she was seized by a final, bitter rage. She lifted the chests of treasure and cast every gold piece into the churning sea, cursing the greed of the dragon and the cowardice of her people. The dragon, whose avarice blinded him, dove headlong after his sinking prize. As the treasure eluded his grasp, an elemental fury, the sheer rage of losing his gold, compelled him to instinctively unleash his terrible Ice Breath. The unaimed blast struck the surrounding water, perhaps in a desperate attempt to freeze the ocean and reclaim his bounty.

The blast was so immense that Zharvorin was instantly entombed, frozen in a colossal iceberg, a monument to his own greed. Hilda of the Fiords sailed her small boat close. She took her heavy wood-splitting axe and methodically hewed a path through the dense ice surrounding his skull until she reached one massive, staring eye. Then, using her fishing spear, she drove the point through the opened hole, piercing the Dragon's brain, and ending his tyranny. She returned a hero, forever after known as Hilda Ice-Axe, the Liberator of the North.
